We wanted to remind you of the dangers of not backing up:
How can I loose data? - PC Crash (Dead hard drive – data not recoverable) - PC Corruption (Faulty component causing data to become corrupted and unusable) - Theft (Stolen computer) - Fire - Accidental deletion (someone deleting a file that was needed – usually in error) - Viruses - Hackers (Individuals seeking to gain information, may damage data in the process)
Not Backing-up has other downsides: - The person loosing the data will have to redo weeks / months / years of work - Some information is impossible to recreate (pictures / personal music / personal documents / client contacts and databases) - The cost of having a service technician attempt to recover lost data can far out way the cost of doing the backups - Your reputation can be questioned, if client data is lost. - It can harm your business if you loose client records that are critical to the function of the organization (financial records, client contact databases, etc)
What should you do:
How can I protect my data? - Backup regularly (frequency will depend or your appetite for risk) - Backup frequently when working on important projects - Implement one of the many backup solutions, which range for manual backups to full automated - Manual Backups (each client would have to copy his or her files to the backup media) Media can include: Second Hard Drive External Drive USB Key Drive Writable CDs Writable DVDs
- Automated backups (backups are done without the need of the client to do anything – usually on a set schedule) Optional Equipment : Secondary HardDrives Server with multiple drives Offsite data storage Network Drive appliance
